Alison & Tom
Tell us a little about how you met
Thomas and I met about 11 years ago through mutual friends. We were introduced over a few drinks in a local pub but we didn’t hit it off right away! Thankfully, after a few more nights out, the barriers came down and we realised we were pretty perfect for each other.
Talk us through the proposal (How did he/she popthe big question?)
It was Boxing Day 2017 and we exchanged gifts after spending Christmas with our families. Thomas had bought me a new dressing gown which I tried on and even lounged around in. Thomas kept chuckling to himself but I had no idea what was going on. Eventually, I got up to start getting ready for the day, and I put my hand in the dressing gown pocket and pulled out a ring. I turned to him saying ‘What is THIS????’ He just laughed and (ever the romantic) said ‘That’s for you!!’ I cried, we hugged and I said Yes – even though I didn’t officially get asked the question!!!
Where was the ceremony?
St. Johns Church, Tralee
Where was your wedding reception?
Ballygarry House Hotel
Why Ballygarry House Hotel & Spa?
We are both from London and had stayed at the Ballygarry when attending a friends wedding nearby. We absolutely loved it, we knew that its reputation was superb and as soon as we started to plan the wedding, the Ballygarry was top of our list. The only date available was just 9 months after the proposal but we knew it was the place we wanted and we never looked back. After our first meeting with Thys, we knew we had made the right decision. He explained to us that we have full use of the pavilion which keeps your wedding guests separate to the hotel guests and it means everyone is together rather than spread out in different areas. A detail like that is something I would never have thought of, but it made such a difference! Every single part of the day was thought about and we felt so completely at ease leaving so much planning in the safe hands of the team. The venue, the grounds, the music, the table décor and the food – wow wow wow!! Nothing was too much trouble and the entire build up and the day itself was stress free and perfect. Relatives from Ireland and England are still raving about the Ballygarry and many are planning future stays at the hotel due to the warmth of the staff, the beauty of the location and the quality of their food.
Tell us what was the most memorable part of your day?
It is such a cliché but, seeing all the people you love and care about in one room, enjoying themselves, celebrating your wedding day, is truly the most memorable thing for us!
We did have quite a special gift from one of our wedding guests though. My colleague, Kevin, from Sky News, edited together a very unique video that we showed after the speeches. He had created a spoof news link with the help of Dermot Murnaghan and Enda Brady reporting from outside the Ballygarry House Hotel. He had even managed to use footage from the day itself, which gave our guests and wedding party such a shock - their reactions were priceless!
Have you any advice for future couples?
Don’t look anywhere else apart from the Ballygarry House Hotel. You will be taken care of from day 1 and made to feel like your big day is THE most important day to them aswell. They have managed to get the perfect balance of running a military operation like a wedding, in a friendly, warm and personable manner. If you get married here, it means you can enjoy and soak up every single moment of the day together – which is what it’s all about!!
